Sofia was just two years old when her parents noticed subtle changes—lethargy, shifting eye movement, and eventually, difficulty walking. What started as a gut feeling turned into a life-changing diagnosis: diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma, or DIPG—a rare and aggressive brain tumor located in the brainstem.

DIPG is inoperable and has no curative treatment. The prognosis is devastating: the average survival is 12 months, and long-term survival is nearly unheard of. But Sofia’s parents chose to begin radiation right away, hoping to gain time—and moments.

The six-week treatment helped. Scans showed reduced tumor size, and Sofia began showing signs of improvement. Her family calls this precious stretch “The Summer of Fia.” They’ve filled it with joyful adventures and made as many memories as possible—including a dream trip to Disney World.

Through it all, Sofia’s light shines brightly. She’s joyful, funny, and full of energy. She loves church, singing hymns, Toy Story (especially Woody), and being surrounded by people who love her. “You’d never know she has terminal brain cancer,” her dad said. “She’s running around, happy as can be.”

Sofia’s journey is a reminder of the beauty and pain that can exist side-by-side. Her parents, grounded in their Christian faith, say their strength comes from trusting in God’s sovereignty. “We’ve cried more than ever, but it’s been a really sweet time too,” her mom said. “Every day is a gift.”

Just In Power Kids has helped Sofia’s family in practical ways—through free meals, parking support, and peace of mind during treatment. “When you’re carrying so much emotionally, those things make a big difference,” her mom shared.

On Day 3 of the Maryland Trek, Sofia will be honored by name and carried in spirit across the miles. And while her path ahead is uncertain, one thing is clear: Sofia’s joy, strength, and faith have left a mark on everyone she meets.
