Emmalyn's journey began on New Year's Eve when she experienced severe ear pain while watching the ball drop. Initially suspected to be an ear infection, her symptoms persisted and escalated to facial numbness and pain. Despite multiple doctor visits and treatments, her condition worsened, leading her family to the emergency room where a tumor was discovered. Subsequent scans at Johns Hopkins revealed that Emmalyn had rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer, specifically spindle cell rhabdomyosarcoma, affecting her sinus cavity and surrounding areas.

It was a devastating diagnosis for Emmalyn and her family. Her treatment began with intense procedures, including chemotherapy and surgery to rid the tumor the size of a large walnut. However, complications arose, including a critical condition where her body began breaking down red blood cells, leading to numerous blood transfusions and further medical challenges.

The family’s journey has been marked by a relentless cycle of treatment and hospital stays, with brief periods of respite overshadowed by recurrent pain and medical emergencies. They have spent nearly a year and a half navigating the complexities of Emmalyn’s illness, often balancing the needs of their other children and managing daily life amidst the turmoil.

Despite the overwhelming challenges, Emmalyn has shown remarkable resilience. She continues to embrace her childhood, pushing through pain and maintaining her spirit. Her family has been deeply moved by the support from their community, including emotional and practical help from friends, local organizations, and charitable foundations.
