A day on the playground led to Gabe’s diagnosis and the beginning of his cancer journey. Gabe, 5 years old at the time, was using the hula hoop at recess when he was pushed and hit his head. His parents became worried as he complained of a worsening headache. They took him for medical help and that’s when imaging revealed a mass the size of a softball in Gabe’s brain.

The doctors prepared Gabe's parents for the worst, explaining that the tumor might affect his ability to walk, talk, and even see. But Gabe was a fighter. After a grueling 14-hour surgery, he surprised everyone. Despite the doctors' fears, he woke up and greeted his mother with a hug, moving the arm they thought might be paralyzed.

Gabe's recovery was tough, but he had his family by his side. His father, a pillar of strength, supported him through every step. His mother, always resourceful and determined, fought for the best care possible. They found solace in their faith and in each other, navigating the challenges with hope and resilience.

But the journey didn’t stop there. Years later, Gabe's tumor returned. This time, he was older and more aware of the gravity of the situation. The emotional toll was heavy, but Gabe faced it with the same courage he had shown as a child and underwent a second surgery.

His family found strength in helping others, raising money for pediatric cancer research, and supporting other families going through similar ordeals.

Gabe's father decided to join the Maryland Trek this year. He said if Gabe could face his battles with such bravery, he could endure a physical challenge to support him.

We asked Gabe what helped him face cancer. His response? His family, ice cream, Oreo milkshakes from Chick-Fil-A, and Legos.
