Welcome to my page! My name is Kara Voigt and this will be my FIRST TREK! I am so excited to embark on this challenge with Justin and the team. Those who know me know that I LOVE a good challenge, especially those requiring endurance!
I decided to join the Maryland Trek for a variety of reasons, but the most important reason is to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer. Everyone of us has been touched in someway by cancer. I lost my mom, Vicky, to cancer in 2014. A few years later, I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 41. Last year, my dad, Tony, was diagnosed with cancer and lost his battle before the holidays. Cancer does not discriminate and wreaks havoc on all that it touches. Beating cancer is one of my life's greatest accomplishments and I am proud to be approaching 4 years cancer free!
Can you imagine being diagnosed with cancer a month before you are supposed to start kindergarten? A time that should be filled with excitement and hope turns into a terrifying journey . This is what happened to my dear friends, the Trueblood Family. Their son, Cooper, was diagnosed with leukemia one month before the start of kindergarten. The family went into battle and Cooper turned into "Super Cooper". Cooper received treatment at Johns Hopkins Children's Hospital and became an inspiration to all that know him. Cooper would even send me videos encouraging me to "kick cancer's booty". Imagine... a 5 year old battling cancer, encouraging a grown adult to keep fighting? I continue to be in awe of Cooper and all young people fighting this horrible disease. I cannot fathom fighting the disease as a child-- it is something no child should have to endure. This is why I have pledged to TREK over 300 miles across the state of Maryland this summer. I will be TREKing for Cooper and all other children impacted by cancer.
Would you join me in the fight against pediatric cancer? I pledge to dig deep and channel the strength of all pediatric cancer fighters as I walk and bike over 300 miles in a week.
